Research Opportunity: Stomach Cancer Risk in People with Inherited Mutations

FORCE (Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered) and UC Davis researchers are studying stomach (gastric) cancer risk factors in people with inherited genetic mutations — and they need your help.

You may be eligible if you:

  • Are 18 or older
  • Have an inherited mutation linked to cancer risk (including BRCA1, BRCA2, Lynch syndrome genes, ATM, CHEK2, PALB2, CDH1, and others)
  • Can complete a survey in English or Spanish

The survey is open to people with or without stomach cancer in their family.

What’s involved: A confidential, anonymous online survey taking about 15 minutes — no in-person visits required. Responses will not be linked to your identity.

Lead Researchers: Sue Friedman, DVM — FORCE and Luis Carvajal-Carmona, PhD — UC Davis

TLCI is sharing this opportunity because research on inherited cancer risk is especially important for Latino communities, where gaps in genetic testing, awareness, and language-accessible resources can affect early detection and care.

Bringing Genetic Risk Education Directly to Community: Tu Historia Cuenta

Tu Historia Cuenta is a collaborative research project led by UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center and TLCI, in partnership with WellSpace Health in Sacramento and San Ysidro Health in San Diego, with support from Gilead Sciences. The project focuses on improving awareness of inherited cancer risk and genetic testing in underserved Latina communities.

Through this program, the team is adapting, implementing, and evaluating a Spanish-language hereditary breast cancer education tool—delivered by trusted promotoras within community health center systems.

We’re proud to share that Tu Historia Cuenta is now featured as a Community Resource case study in the American Cancer Society’s National Breast Cancer Roundtable (NBCRT) Digital Toolkit, which has seen 1,722 views and 19 case study downloads since its January 2026 launch.
