Latina Breast Cancer, Health Equity & Advocacy

Our latest newsletter—marking the final installment of the 2024 Friday Forum Series—dives into urgent issues facing Latino communities in cancer care.

The March edition spotlights troubling disparities in Latina breast cancer outcomes. In a powerful insight, Dr. Eliseo Pérez-Stable notes:

Not having insurance or having Medicaid increases the odds for Latinas to be diagnosed with stage 3 cancer.”

We share highlights from our recent Townhall on breast cancer research, where participants emphasized that genomic (tumor) testing—despite being a proven, decades-old tool—still isn’t reaching all Latina patients who could benefit from it.

The newsletter also recaps our final Friday Forum session, where Dr. Elizabeth Jaffee called for the professionalization of community health work: “This should be a profession where people get paid and trained.”

We showcase that vision in action through Dr. Barbara Segarra-Vázquez’s Latino Cancer Patient Advocacy Training program, which has already empowered 15 advocates to engage in national cancer networks.

In closing, we explore emerging policy challenges, including changes in how federal agencies frame health equity. Plus, we reveal our 2025 Friday Forum theme:
“Latino Male Health – Cancer, An Unaddressed Burden,” with sessions scheduled for September 12, October 3, and October 24, 2025. Download the flyer for TLCI’s 2025 Forums.
