Ysabel Duron Is a “Mujer Imparable”—Telemundo Makes It Official

The Latino Cancer Institute (TLCI) is proud to share that our Founder and Executive Director, award-winning journalist and patient advocate Ysabel Duron, has been honored by Telemundo as a “Mujer Imparable” (Unstoppable Woman). This national spotlight celebrates her decades-long leadership in Latino cancer education, advocacy, and community empowerment.

Telemundo’s feature traces Ms. Duron’s 25-year “encore career” in patient advocacy, beginning with her own Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosis in 1999—a turning point that propelled her to confront cancer inequities impacting Latino communities. Her belief that culturally rooted, trusted information can save lives continues to guide TLCI’s mission every day.

External leaders in the cancer advocacy and data rights space have taken notice of Ms. Duron’s impact. As Andrea Downing, Co-Founder of Light Collective, observed:

“Ysabel Duron is redefining patient advocacy. She forces institutions to move beyond tokenism and see Latino patients as equal partners—with voice, expertise, and resources to shape cancer research and care.” —Andrea Downing, Co-Founder, Light Collective

Momentum Meets Recognition

Telemundo’s honor arrives at a defining moment for TLCI—one marked by national visibility, expanded partnerships, and sustained advocacy. Under Ms. Duron’s leadership, the Institute is transforming lived experience into evidence-based action, convening national experts and demanding better outcomes for Latino patients, families, and survivors.

Key 2024–2025 Milestones of an Unstoppable Institute

Addressing Climate, Cancer & Equity in Peer Review

Ms. Duron and co-authors published a peer-reviewed commentary in Cancer Causes & Control, titled Climate change, cancer, and the critical importance of Latino community engagement.” Accessed more than 1,500 times, the article examines how climate change intensifies cancer risks and care barriers for Latino communities, calling for community-led solutions.

Leading National Conversations on Latino Men’s Health

In 2025, TLCI anchored a virtual Friday Forum Series—Spotlighting Cancer: An Unanswered Burden”focused on Latino men’s health. The series brought together patients, clinicians, researchers, and community leaders to address early detection, stigma, and the economic and emotional toll of cancer on Latino families.

Amplifying Patient and Survivor Voices Nationally

Ms. Duron continues to elevate Latino patient perspectives in high-profile spaces, including the FDA’s Oncology Center of Excellence Conversations on Cancer series and precision medicine convenings. She consistently presses for research, innovation, and policy grounded in the realities of Spanish-speaking, low-income, and immigrant communities.

This recognition underscores a core belief that drives TLCI’s work: to close cancer outcome gaps, Latino communities must have equitable access to trusted information, culturally grounded care, and a real voice in research and policy—regardless of language, income, or ZIP code.
