Green 2.0’s 2023 NGO & Foundation Transparency Report Card

Despite the disproportionate impact of climate change on people of color, nonprofits tackling environmental issues continue to be predominantly led by non-Hispanic whites. Green 2.0’s 2023 NGO & Foundation Transparency Report Card reveals that only 7.6% of NGO board members and 5.3% of organizational heads identifying as Hispanic, which is disproportionately low considering that Hispanics/Latinos make up 19% of the US population.
The report card emphasizes how crucial leadership pipelines are for diverse individuals within environmental organizations. External factors, including the overturning of affirmative action and the reduction of diversity programs, contribute to the lack of Latinos in leadership positions. It’s imperative to address systemic barriers and foster inclusivity in the fight against climate change.
Latinos are deeply invested in environmental issues, often viewing them through the lens of family health and community well-being. Organizations should actively partner with and support local communities struggling with environmental and climate change issues that cause health, mental health, and financial toxicity in Latinos. This collaboration can harness local knowledge and grassroots initiatives, fostering inclusivity and enhancing the effectiveness of environmental advocacy. We can advance environmental justice and achieve a more comprehensive and equitable approach to addressing climate change.
The Latino Cancer Institute is at the forefront of the discussion about Latinos, the environment, and health, and we recently highlighted this intersection during our 5th Annual National Forum, The Turbulent Ecosystem: Climate Change’s Impact on the Latino Cancer Burden!
