“An embodiment of resilience and leadership, Ysabel Duron stands as a testament to the power of advocacy. As a trailblazing Latina journalist and a cancer survivor, her 23-year journey as a patient activist has touched countless lives. From her diagnosis in 1999, she transformed her battle into a purpose-driven mission, giving voice to the Latino community in cancer care.
Breaking barriers, President Joe Biden appointed Duron to the National Cancer Advisory Board, making her the first patient advocate to grace the NCAB.
Her advocacy took form in many ways:
✨ Led Latinas Contra Cancer, focusing on Latino cancer issues.
✨ Developed unique education tools like the innovative bingo game to promote awareness.
✨ Founded The Latino Cancer Institute, amplifying Latino voices on the cancer burden and collaborating with prestigious academic partners.
✨ Invited twice to The White House for monumental cancer initiatives.
As a passionate advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion, Duron’s impact is felt through her work with institutes like California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, ensuring a focus on racial and ethnic representation.
With a journalism career spanning 43 years, Duron’s accolades are numerous, from being inducted into the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Hall of Fame in 2009 to winning prestigious awards including two Emmys and the 150-thousand dollar Purpose Prize from Encore.org
Ysabel Duron, a name synonymous with dedication, resilience, and advocacy. We salute her unwavering commitment to empowering communities and making a difference in the world of health and media.”
