Rising Heat, Unequal Risks: How Extreme Heat Is Affecting Latino Communities in California’s Central Valley

22 Jun, 2026 | Research

Where people live and work can influence health in ways that extend far beyond medical care. This policy toolkit from UCLA’s Latino Policy and Politics Institute examines how extreme heat is affecting Latino communities in California’s Central Valley, where residents often face overlapping environmental, occupational, and housing-related challenges.

Drawing on community input and regional data, the report highlights disparities in heat exposure, tree canopy coverage, workplace conditions, and health outcomes. It also outlines practical policy recommendations to improve community resilience, strengthen worker protections, expand outreach through trusted community organizations, and reduce the health risks associated with rising temperatures.
