Now Online: FDA’s Conversations on Cancer Panel Discusses Latino Cancer

The Conversations on Cancer panel from September 26, 2024, is now available online! Watch this insightful discussion in English, Spanish, or Portuguese as the panelists share their perspectives on improving cancer care for Hispanic and Latino communities.

Ysabel Duron, Founder of The Latino Cancer Institute, emphasized a key issue: we have a sick care system instead of a prevention system. To change this, we need to invest in community-based organizations (CBOs) to recruit, train, and deploy community health workers (CHWs) who can raise awareness, dispel myths, and guide people to cancer screenings.

Key takeaways from the panel:

  1. Cancer doesn’t begin at the clinic. It’s crucial to start awareness efforts in the community—early and often.
  2. Cultural competence is vital. The word “cancer” carries a heavy burden in many Hispanic/Latino communities, often due to misconceptions and fears.
  3. Representation matters. Having Hispanic/Latino healthcare providers and researchers can significantly impact patient trust and participation in clinical trials.
  4. Access to care remains a significant barrier. Hispanics have some of the lowest rates of insurance in the United States.
  5. Social media and technology can be powerful tools for reaching and educating Hispanic/Latino communities about cancer.
  6. Community-based clinical trials can increase participation. Empowering local healthcare providers to conduct trials can build trust and improve access.
  7. Language and cultural sensitivity in healthcare communication are crucial. Simply translating documents isn’t enough.
