The Latino Cancer Institute (TLCI) is grateful to the Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, and our legislature for moving talk into action.
With the passage of SB987 and the Governor’s signature, the most vulnerable populations of our communities across the state, will have access to optimal care tailored to their particular cancer diagnosis.
The bill authored by Anthony Portantino, 25th Senate District, San Fernando Valley, gives choice to almost 14 million Medi-Cal beneficiaries with complex cancer diagnosis, to seek care at specialty cancer centers.
That’s a huge step in the right direction. And TLCI is grateful to be part of the California Cancer Care is Different Coalition which tirelessly advocated for this next step in equity access and care!
But our work is far from done. I invite you to join TLCI at our 4th Annual National Latino Cancer Institute Forum, October 28th when our Pfizer colleague Isabella Grueso, will present her Report Card on the breast cancer policies of six U.S. states where a large majority of Latinas live.
She’ll report how the states’ policies or lack thereof, might impact breast cancer screening and survivorship for Latinas. When Ms. Grueso first applied her Report Card research to Latin American countries, Brazil, stood above the rest. Since then, other countries have used her findings to improve on breast cancer support for their populations. I must acknowledge that Pfizer has been a financial supporter of our work, but has no influence on what we choose to investigate or with whom we do research.
I am excited to hear from Ms. Grueso to inform our work here in the U.S. and to make diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) a real practice, and not just a series of letters.
