The climate crisis is here. And it impacts cancer outcomes in ways we’re just beginning to understand. It’s more than just changing weather patterns. It’s toxic neighborhoods, lost homes, lost jobs, lost health. Join The Latino Cancer Institute (TLCI) and expert presenters as they share insights and new findings on climate change, environmental racism driven by bad policy, and how disparate climate factors exacerbate the Latino cancer burden.

Keynote Speaker

Leticia Nogueira, PhD, MPH, Senior Principal Scientist, Health Services Research American Cancer Society. Her presentation on Climate Change and Cancer: The Latinx Perspective examines how extreme weather events damage medical infrastructure, disrupt transportation, break supply chains and interrupt access to potentially life-saving treatments from prevention to survivorship care. She will also explain how discriminatory policies and practices also lead to Latinx individuals being more frequently exposed to contaminated air, soil, and water from fossil fuel infrastructure. Therefore, Latinx individuals diagnosed with cancer are being impacted first and worst by the threats of climate change.

Joining other experts on the Forum calendar is Ana Patricia Ortiz, PhD, MPH, of the University of Puerto Rico and Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Ortiz, a Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, will share recent findings of the continuing harms suffered by cervical cancer patients as a result of Hurricanes IRMA and Maria.

Special Guest – Ask the Congressman

Joaquin Castro, D., San Antonio, Texas, joins The Forum to discuss his cancer journey, the financial toxicity of a cancer diagnosis, and his call for universal health care.
