TLCI Participates in Major Hispanic Cancer Awareness Initiatives this September

On September 20, 2024, Ysabel Duron, founder of The Latino Cancer Institute (TLCI) and a member of the National Cancer Advisory Board at the NCI, will join the FDA’s “Conversations on Cancer” panel. Following the FDA panel, Duron will kick off TLCI’s Friday Forum Series, a new initiative designed to foster conversations around cancer care, prevention, and research specifically within Latino communities.

Both the FDA panel and TLCI’s Friday Forum will serve as critical platforms to discuss the specific challenges Latino communities face in the battle against cancer.

FDA’s National Hispanic Family Cancer Awareness Week

From September 20-26, 2024, the FDA Oncology Center of Excellence is holding its inaugural National Hispanic Family Cancer Awareness Week. The purpose is to increase cancer awareness, promote clinical trial participation, and encourage contributions to national genetic databases for cancer research within the Hispanic population.

Conversations on Cancer: National Hispanic/Latino Family Cancer Awareness Week

The week will feature a Conversation on Cancer public panel discussion on September 20, and a social media campaign throughout the week using the hashtag #LatinePuede!

  • Friday, September 20 – Register and virtually attend the Oncology Center of Excellence (OCE) Conversation on Cancer public discussion.
  • Saturday, September 21 – Learn more information about cancer disparities.
  • Sunday, September 22 – Discuss your family’s cancer history.
  • Monday, September 23– Learn how environment risks impact cancer development.
  • Tuesday, September 24 – Learn more about cancer research and clinical trials.
  • Wednesday, September 25, – Provide support to patients, caregivers, and patient advocates/navigators.
  • Thursday, September 26 – Understand and support cancer quality of life and cancer survivorship.

TLCI’s Friday Forum Series Kickoff

In conjunction with these national efforts, TLCI is launching its own Friday Forum Series, also kicking off on September 20, 2024. Our 6-part virtual series “Talking about Cancer Won’t Kill Us, the Silence Will” covers several cancers impacting Latino communities. These discussions will bring together community leaders, researchers, and advocates to create lasting change and improve health outcomes for Latino families facing cancer.

  4. October 11th – How Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Health Tech Intersect in Latino Lives (1.5 hrs)
  5. October 18th – Can the HPV Vaccine Help Conquer Latina Cervical Cancer? (1.5 hrs)
  6. October 25th – 6th Annual Forum: A National Perspective on the Impact of Cancer Research, Leadership, and Engagement within the Latino Community (3 hrs)
