Stick with me on this!

A man named John Fetterman said he should have listened to his doctor, taken his medication and exercised more. In case you haven’t been following, John Fetterman is the current Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania, recently on the cusp of winning his state’s Democratic senatorial nomination, when he suffered a stroke. Fetterman’s mea culpa referred to his error for failing to take prescribed medication for a heart condition diagnosed in 2017.

Like so many men, Fetterman said, I avoided going to the doctor, even though I didn’t feel well! It’s not clear if his neglect, contributed directly to his stroke.

June is dedicated to Men’s Health… the purpose is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems, encourage early detection and treatment of disease among both men and boys.

In my TV journalism career I worked with a lot of men, who watched my back. I feel equally compelled to pay it forward, so, The Latino
Cancer Institute is joining the chorus to say: get, at least, an annual check-up, know your family health history to inform your own possible risk, and please, get the indicated cancer screenings as your family history and age dictate.

Cancer is now the leading cause of disease and death in Latino men according to the American Cancer Society. I like to tell Latino men (tongue in cheek), “your biggest risk factor is being male!”

Don’t listen to me, listen to Lt. Governor John Fetterman! I almost died, he said, encouraging other men to take their health seriously. We do, especially for men who face more than their own self neglect and/or machismo. Strokes, heart disease, cancer are no joke. That’s why, every October, The Latino Cancer Institute turns a spotlight of its own on cancer and its impacts.
